Akçakale Mayor who resigned from AKP becomes YRP candidate: 'We will write this epic together'

Mehmet Yalçınkaya, the Mayor of Akçakale in Şanlıurfa, who was not renominated by the AKP, resigned on February 9 along with 17 municipal council members.

In his statement, Yalçınkaya said, “I am the captain. A captain fears only God. Our stance is clear; as I said, while no one else would defend the President, we stepped up and defended him. While no one knew the Arabs, we stepped up and fought for them. I was going to ask for permission to leave, but I cannot abandon them in the face of their determination, victimization, and oppression. We are in this together. We will write this epic together.”

Following his resignation from the AK Party, Yalçınkaya joined the New Welfare Party.

Mehmet Kasım Gülpınar, the New Welfare Party's candidate for the Şanlıurfa Metropolitan Municipality, pinned the party badges on Yalçınkaya and former Akçakale District Head İbrahim Yıldık, who also resigned from the AK Party.
