AKP-run Sulusaray Municipality had requested to change the name of 'Ömer Halisdemir Street': The mayor has resigned!

Tokat's Sulusaray Municipality faced backlash after the municipal council members voted by majority during the August council meeting to rename the street bearing the name of Ömer Halisdemir to that of Şahin Hasgül, who served as mayor of the district for 4 terms. 

After the decision was reported in the press, the Tokat Governor's Office canceled the decision.

Following the incident, Mayor Necmettin Coruk, who was referred to the authorized disciplinary bodies by the AKP Tokat Provincial Presidency with a request for permanent expulsion from the party, announced that he has resigned from his party.

Mayor Coruk stated the following in his announcement:

"I have been serving as the Mayor of Sulusaray district since 2019 with the approval of our esteemed President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the support of our precious Sulusaray people. I offer my deepest respects and gratitude to our President, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who leads us through service and whose goal is a love for the homeland, for the opportunities he has given me to serve my district. However, due to the unfortunate events that have occurred recently, I am resigning from my party in order not to harm the AK Party family, of which I have been a loyal member since 2002 and to whose values I have remained sincerely committed."
