AKP, which received 23 percent of the vote, will govern Adalar, won by CHP! 6 municipalities changed hands through deputy mayor elections

The deputy mayor election in Adalar Municipality resulted in the victory of AKP candidate Kemal Türkyılmaz following a shift in the balance of power in the municipal council. In the district, which the CHP won with 55.48 percent of the vote in the March 31, 2024 local elections, the AKP's vote share in the local elections had been 22.85 percent.

Medine Pamuk, who was elected deputy mayor after Adalar Mayor Ali Ercan Akpolat was arrested and suspended from office, resigned from her post on September 14, citing health problems. Following this, the municipal council convened to determine the new deputy mayor. The AKP nominated Kemal Türkyılmaz, while the CHP nominated Aytül Ekşiyan.

ELECTION CONCLUDED IN FOUR ROUNDS

In the first round of the election, the AKP candidate emerged ahead by one vote. In the second round, after one vote was declared invalid, the AKP and CHP candidates each received 4 votes. Due to the tension in the hall, the area where the session was held was cleared. In the third and fourth rounds, after the CHP and YENİ Party did not participate in the voting, Türkyılmaz was elected deputy mayor with a 5-0 result.

COUNCIL ARITHMETIC CHANGED

Developments affecting the council arithmetic before the election also drew attention. It was reported that after the resignation of Deputy Mayor Fırat Durak, who was arrested along with Mayor Akpolat, substitute member Mehmet Ceylan would cast a vote in his place. It was stated that the voting restriction on council member Yavuz Çiftçioğlu, who is subject to a judicial control decision, had been lifted, while the restriction on Nesimi Aday remained in place.

On the CHP front, it was emphasized that the council balance in Adalar was changed through allegations of pressure and transfers. It was announced that CHP council members Yavuz Çiftçioğlu, İsmail Onur Balbınar, and Ahmet Tanay Garip, who were stated to have voted for the AKP, were referred to the disciplinary board.

THREE CHP MEMBERS REFERRED TO DISCIPLINARY BOARD

In his statement, CHP's Gürsel Tekin said, "Three municipal council members have been referred to the disciplinary board with a request for permanent expulsion due to their attitudes that do not align with the corporate will of the CHP. No attitude that ignores the will of the people and party discipline can be accepted."

According to the report by Nefes, the last AKP era in Adalar Municipality occurred when Coşkun Özden was elected mayor from ANAP in 1999 and joined the AKP in 2004. The district had been won by the CHP in the 2009, 2014, 2019, and 2024 local elections.

NUMBER OF MUNICIPALITIES PASSING TO AKP ROSE TO 6

It was stated that with Adalar, the number of CHP-held municipalities that passed to the AKP in deputy mayor elections held as a result of changes in municipal council arithmetic has reached 6. Previously, the deputy mayoralty had also passed to the AKP in Bursa Metropolitan, Gaziosmanpaşa, Bayrampaşa, Akçakoca, and Üsküdar.
