Allegations of a 'fistfight' between Mahmut Tanal and Ali Mahir Başarır

A new development has occurred regarding the signature debates for the general chairmanship candidacy within the CHP, which is preparing to hold its congress on November 4-5.

According to the report by journalist Altan Sancar, CHP Şanlıurfa Deputy Mahmut Tanal, CHP Group Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır insulted him and attempted to punch him.

It was alleged that following the collection of signatures for the congress in the Parliament General Assembly and Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır's objection to this in a WhatsApp group, Mahmut Tanal physically intervened against and insulted Başarır.

Upon the emergence of information that signatures were being collected, some figures from the CHP and Başarır objected, saying, "Young and new deputies might feel under pressure" .

Tanal, who used harsh language directed at Başarır and his family, also pointing to the leaking of WhatsApp group correspondence to the press, swung a punch at Başarır's chest.

Although parliamentary police arrived at the scene after hearing the noise, they were unable to intervene upon seeing that the dispute was between deputies. The incident ended when other party members intervened. 

Ali Mahir Başarır said, "As group deputy chairman, I will not comment" .

Sancar stated, "Parliamentary staff and CHP members who witnessed the events confirm the situation" .

STATEMENT FROM MAHMUT TANAL

CHP Deputy Mahmut Tanal released a statement regarding the allegations on his social media account.

In his statement, Tanal said, "A discussion and tension occurred between our Group Deputy Chairman and Mersin Deputy Ali Mahir Başarır and myself regarding the congress process. However, there was absolutely no mutual insult regarding our persons or family honor." .

Tanal continued as follows:

"The claim in your post that 'I used harsh expressions directed at Ali Mahir Başarır's person and family' is a complete lie! Ali Mahir Başarır's family is my family, and my family is Ali Mahir Başarır's family. Every CHP member's family is my family. Just as we have fought together until yesterday against injustice and the arbitrary practices of the government, we will continue our struggle as a group in the same way from now on.

I emphasize again and again! The CHP is a party that has internalized democracy. Even if there are different views among us, we are always part of a big family. CHP deputies do not insult the honor, dignity, or family of each other or anyone else."
