Allegations of torture by bastinado at Marmara University brought to Parliament's agenda

CHP İzmir Deputy Yüksel Taşkın has brought an alleged incident of violence at Marmara University's Göztepe Campus to the agenda of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM). 

ALLEGATION OF BASTINADO 

Taşkın submitted a parliamentary question for the Ministry of National Education to answer regarding allegations that a law student was forcibly detained and subjected to bastinado by an ultranationalist group.

SUBMITTED TO PARLIAMENTARY AGENDA 

Drawing attention to the allegations that the student was assaulted and subjected to torture within the campus, Taşkın stated, “It is clear that this incident is not isolated. It is known that the group in question has created its own private spaces on the university campus and that similar incidents of violence and threats have occurred before. The university administration and officials are turning a blind eye to this situation.”

Stating that students' right to education in an environment free from violence is being systematically violated, Taşkın said, “We will not ignore any official who tries to cover up such incidents. We will not allow universities to be surrendered to an environment of pressure and fear.”

Yüksel Taşkın directed the following questions to the Ministry of National Education:

Has an investigation been launched into the allegation that violence was inflicted upon a student studying at the Marmara University Faculty of Law?

Has an investigation been launched into the allegation that a group identifying themselves as “Ülkücüler” (Idealists) is threatening and pressuring other students?

Is there a security vulnerability at the Marmara University Göztepe Campus?

Photographs in the press showing Rector Mustafa Kurt with members of this group that perpetrates violence raise suspicions of favoritism. What is Rector Kurt’s statement regarding this matter?

What measures has the university administration taken to ensure the safety and access to the right to education of its students who are systematically threatened and subjected to physical violence by certain groups?

What measures is the university administration taking to ensure that the campus is a safe living space for all students?
