Another CHP municipality faces foreclosure: Following the 'shake them up' instruction

At the beginning of December, following a cabinet meeting, Erdoğan had instructed Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan, saying, "It would be beneficial to shake them up more decisively."

Following the instruction, the ministry placed blocks on the deposit and corporate accounts of many CHP-run municipalities that were stated to have premium debts to the Social Security Institution (SGK). A new one has been added to the municipalities against which foreclosure proceedings were initiated by the ministry.

FORECLOSURE PROCEEDINGS AGAINST BEYOĞLU MUNICIPALITY

According to the report by Altan Sancar from Sözcü, the Beyoğlu Municipality, which passed to CHP administration in the 2024 local elections, has been placed under foreclosure by the Social Security Institution (SGK) due to debts inherited from the previous AKP administration.

The SGK has placed liens on public areas, including schools, historical fountains, parks, roads, and buildings owned by the municipality.

The foreclosure request, which also covers areas that are under municipal ownership but remain in public use due to unplanned urbanization and zoning issues, includes numerous locations ranging from schools to social markets, and from historical fountains to buildings.

FORECLOSURE ON A MIDDLE SCHOOL IN CİHANGİR

The Cihangir Münir Özkul Middle School and its land, located on plot 45, parcels 8 and 9 in the Kılıçali Paşa neighborhood, with a 2024 fair market value calculated at 148 million, were also among the points hit by the foreclosure.

NO RESPONSE TO THE MUNICIPALITY'S REQUEST

On the other hand, it has emerged that the Beyoğlu Municipality had requested the transfer of the land in exchange for the payment of tax debts on August 3, 2023, but no response has been provided by the ministry to date.

SOCIAL MARKET ALSO ON THE FORECLOSURE LIST

Among the areas of the Beyoğlu Municipality that were foreclosed upon is the Social Market, where social aid is distributed to 6,100 people in need.

In addition, the municipal district community center in Dolapdere, as well as the art gallery on İstiklal Avenue and the auxiliary service building housing citizen service units, have also been added to the foreclosure list.

HISTORICAL LALELİ FOUNTAIN ALSO UNDER FORECLOSURE

The historical Laleli Fountain in the Bereketzade neighborhood, which is registered as a first-degree protected cultural asset, is also among the properties hit by the foreclosure. The two-sided fountain, which gives its name to the street where it is located, is estimated to have been built by Italian architect Raimondo d’Aronco in 1904. In addition to the Laleli Fountain, which bears traces of the Art Nouveau movement, three other historical fountains are among the points hit by the foreclosure. Furthermore, the garden of the Kadiriler Tekke Mosque and the park area in front of the Yenişehir Mosque are also facing SGK foreclosure.
