AK Party Deputy Chairman and Election Affairs Chairman Ali İhsan Yavuz made statements regarding the election calendar. Speaking in Eskişehir as part of the "Turkey Meetings" program, Yavuz said that the party has not made any decision regarding an election at this stage.
Stating that one of the questions he encounters most often is when the election will be held, Yavuz said, "Currently, there is no decision made by our party. Because there is much more time until the election. We say now is the time for work," he expressed.
Pointing to the normal calendar for the presidential election, Yavuz said that even if no decision is made in the current situation, the election will be held in May 2028. Yavuz stated that there are three ways for the election date to be moved forward: a constitutional amendment, a decision by the President to renew the election, or a decision by the TBMM (Grand National Assembly of Turkey) to renew the election.
Yavuz explained the AK Party's expectation with these words: "We want the Grand National Assembly of Turkey to make a decision to renew the election within the year 2028, but in a way that corresponds to 1-2 weeks before the original date, and we want our esteemed President to be our leader and President once again."
Responding to early election claims, Yavuz said, "There is no election next year as others say. You can think that the elections will take place within the year 2028."
MESSAGE ON A NEW CONSTITUTION
Yavuz also provided information regarding work on a new and civil constitution. Stating that a 10-person team established under the chairmanship of Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz is conducting work, Yavuz expressed that the preparations will be presented to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Arguing that the current constitutional order makes some changes difficult, Yavuz said that the initiative to separate headman (muhtar) elections from local elections could not be carried out due to constitutional obstacles. Yavuz stated that they have not given up on the goal of a "new, civil, democratic constitution."
In his speech, Yavuz also touched upon Istanbul Airport. Stating that 84 million passengers flew from the airport last year and 87 million passengers are expected this year, Yavuz said that the annual passenger capacity will increase even further with the increase in the number of runways.
