Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç attended the 8th Ordinary Congress of the AKP Bartın Central District.

Making evaluations regarding the agenda at the congress held at the Bartın Culture Center, Tunç issued a statement concerning the criticisms made by İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu regarding the "Rule of Law Index."

'THEY CANNOT DIGEST IT...'

Highlights from Tunç's statements are as follows:

"If we had not established a judiciary system based on the rule of law during the treacherous July 15 coup attempt, would this nation have been successful against the coup plotters on July 15 if a judiciary system that stood by the September 12s of the past, a judiciary system that laid its robes on the ground in front of coup plotters on February 28s and stood at attention before them, a judiciary system that sentenced Adnan Menderes and his ministers to death on May 27s had prevailed in our country? We had a judiciary system that, together with our nation, did not sit at home that night, but rushed to the courthouses, issued arrest warrants against those traitors, issued detention orders, and ensured they were held accountable before the law. This is what cannot be digested today. This is the reason for the daily attacks on justice, law, and the judiciary. Those who long for the tutelary mindset, those who miss the Yassıada judiciary, and those who used the judiciary as their backyard in the past cannot digest it today because the judiciary is the nation's judiciary, and they are constantly trying to attack it. We will absolutely not allow these attacks.

RESPONSE TO THE INDEX

Saying that Turkey is low on the rule of law index... It is nonsense. They keep repeating this. It is an association founded by a former president of the American Bar Association in the USA, and it is a list created by this association. They are trying to show Turkey at the very bottom of the rule of law index in a list that is far from scientific criteria, does not match the realities of Turkey, is created by taking the opinions of a few opposition figures in Turkey, and is kept alive by donations, where the donor is placed in the top ranks. Who believes this? In the press freedom index, they show Israel, which has martyred and killed 170 journalists in just this one year, ahead of Turkey. Can such an index be trusted? These are entirely black propaganda made against our country. Unfortunately, opposition parties are also trying to act as spokespersons for this black propaganda and these untrustworthy, nonsensical indices. We will absolutely not allow our judiciary to be slandered. Our 25 thousand judges and prosecutors are working day and night so that our nation can benefit from judicial services in the most just way. Of course, there may be those who make erroneous decisions within it, but the correction mechanism for this—appeals, cassation, and objections—is possible, and these take place within its own structure. Therefore, we must be vigilant against this deliberate propaganda, this propaganda that Turkey does not deserve.

NEW CONSTITUTION

In the coming days, our President will also announce the Judicial Reform Strategy Document, which will take the progress we have made regarding justice that is based on the rule of law, does not delay, and is predictable, even further. We will hopefully implement new regulations that demonstrate our determination in the fight against crime and criminals, which particularly disturbs society. We have worked very hard to eliminate the tutelary spirit in our Constitution. Our nation supported this. Now our goal is a new constitution. Democratic, civilian, participatory... Despite so many changes, I hope it will be our destiny to implement a social contract that eliminates all articles that still carry the tutelary spirit among them and lead to a number of contradictions and debates, a contract made by the representatives of our nation and approved by our nation. This is what befits the Century of Turkey. In these meaningful days when we have started the second century of our Republic, I hope a consensus is reached in Parliament and Turkey continues on its path with a democratic constitution."
