Another trustee? Flash decision from the Court of Cassation regarding the Van Metropolitan Municipality Mayor!

Van Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Abdullah Zeydan had completed the 3-year prison sentence he received as part of a case opened in 2016 and was released after spending 6 years in prison. 

The Diyarbakır 5th High Criminal Court had confirmed that Zeydan had completed his sentence and allowed him to exercise his prohibited rights.

HE HAD BECOME MAYOR FROM THE DEM PARTY

Zeydan, who was a candidate from the DEM Party in the March 31, 2024 local elections, won the Van Metropolitan Municipality Mayoralty. However, just before the elections, the Ministry of Justice appealed to the Supreme Election Council (YSK), claiming that Zeydan's execution period had been calculated incorrectly. Initially, Zeydan was not given his certificate of election, but following the reaction of the people of Van, the YSK delivered his certificate.

DECISION ISSUED BY THE COURT OF CASSATION 

The Ministry of Justice applied to the Court of Cassation for Zeydan to lose his certificate of election. Journalist İsmail Saymaz announced on the program Sansürsüz that the 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation had overturned the Diyarbakır 5th High Criminal Court's decision stating that Abdullah Zeydan had completed his sentence.

Saymaz stated, "The Court of Cassation made its decision today and canceled the local court's decision regarding Zeydan. If the local court confirms this decision, Abdullah Zeydan may lose his certificate of election."
