Bahçeli calls for new regulations for the electoral system

MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli made evaluations regarding the electoral system, the order of political parties, and current political debates in an interview with his party's publication, Türkgün newspaper.

Reminding that Turkey transitioned to the Presidential Government System with the constitutional amendment on April 16, 2017, Bahçeli stated that the current political structure must be made compatible with the new system.

Bahçeli said, "In the coming period, it is necessary to reorganize political parties and the electoral system with an understanding that is in line with the spirit of the system and based on political stability and democratic development."

These remarks by Bahçeli have brought the topic of making changes to political parties and electoral legislation back to the agenda while discussions regarding the election calendar and 2028 continue.

EVALUATION OF CHP AND THE NEW PARTY

In his interview, Bahçeli also touched upon the process that began with the "absolute nullity" debates within the CHP, stating that they do not find it right for these developments to turn into conflict and fragmentation within the party. Bahçeli noted that they have called for unity against the attempts at fragmentation and division within the CHP.

Stating that Özgür Özel and his colleagues have founded the YENİ Party, Bahçeli reported that the number of political parties has risen to 190 according to Court of Cassation records. Bahçeli expressed that they do not approve of the division of the CHP but wished the YENİ Party success.

In his assessment regarding the second opening process, which he calls "Terror-Free Turkey" and of which he is the architect, Bahçeli said that Turkey's fundamental goal is to resolve the issue of terrorism within the framework of national unity, political stability, and economic stability.

Criticizing the decision of Özgür Özel and the party leadership to vote "yes" in the parliamentary vote on the Framework Law while leaving their deputies free in their choices, Bahçeli argued that this stance shows that a common political will has not yet formed within the YENİ Party.
