Behind the Scenes: The candidate YRP is discussing for Istanbul

Turkey will head to the polls for local elections on March 31, 2024.

With less than 2 months remaining until the critical elections, alliance negotiations between political parties are continuing.

The AKP, which wants to regain the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality it lost in 2019, has nominated Murat Kurum to run against IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.

While the AKP continues its negotiations with the New Welfare Party for Istanbul, a striking claim has come from journalist Barış Yarkadaş.

Barış Yarkadaş claimed that if the New Welfare Party decides to field a candidate, that person would be Elif Erbakan.

In his broadcast on TV100, Yarkadaş stated, “It is being said that if the New Welfare Party fields a candidate in Istanbul, it will likely be Elif Erbakan. She is the daughter of the late Necmettin Erbakan and the older sister of Chairman Fatih Erbakan. This is what is being discussed within the New Welfare Party.”

No decision on a partnership has emerged from the negotiations between the two parties so far. However, an AKP delegation visited the New Welfare Party this evening. Following the meeting, it was announced that “The party leaders will have the final say.”
