Berat Albayrak recounts the night of July 15: 'There is much that will go to the grave with us'

Former Minister of Treasury and Finance Berat Albayrak made statements regarding the night of the July 15 coup attempt. Albayrak used the phrase, "There is much that will go to the grave with us," regarding that night.

Describing the night of July 15, Albayrak stated that it is difficult to describe what happened under ordinary conditions, saying, "There is much that will go to the grave with us from that night. But we remember some of it, and we have forgotten some of it."

Evaluating the public's decision to take to the streets on the night of the coup attempt, Albayrak said, "I say this to everyone, to my friends. I say, 'Look friends, we are meeting on the bridge at nine tonight. There is a coup. Agreed? But there are tanks there, we will go out with our bare hands.' I don't know how many people would come if I said that. But that night, millions of people took to the field with their bare hands, with a sense of tranquility and emotion descending from the sky."

Touching upon the events on the plane while traveling with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Albayrak stated that, according to what they learned later, one of the two pilots on the plane was a member of FETÖ. Albayrak explained that, based on the information reaching them that night, landing at Sabiha Gökçen Airport was considered risky, which is why they decided to divert to Atatürk Airport.

According to Albayrak's account, one of the pilots opposed the landing at Atatürk Airport, citing reasons such as the runway being dark and the possibility that trucks might have been pulled onto the runway. Albayrak stated that he then spoke with the relevant authority again, and after receiving the response, "Don't worry at all. The operation is complete," he spoke with Erdoğan, and the plane landed at Atatürk Airport.

Emphasizing that what happened that night should be told to younger generations, Albayrak pointed to the importance of keeping the memory of the martyrs and veterans alive. Albayrak said, "We have a responsibility for this. Your speaking, telling the story, and keeping this process alive through our martyrs and veterans is very valuable."
