Breaking News... Ankara's support was not enough: A shock for Ersin Tatar in the TRNC elections!

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) went to the polls today to elect its new President. Voting, which began at 08:00, ended at 18:00. In the election where 218 thousand 313 voters cast their ballots, 777 ballot boxes were set up across the country. Supreme Election Board (YSK) Chairman Bertan Özerdağ announced that the voter turnout was 62.83 percent.

TUFAN ERHÜRMAN WON

The first round of the presidential election has concluded, and according to the initial results, the candidate who received the most votes has been determined. Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman became the new President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus by receiving 62.80 percent of the valid votes according to unofficial results.

AKP WAS SUPPORTING TATAR

It was known that the AKP supported the incumbent President Ersin Tatar before the election.

The order on the ballot paper for the first round of the election, in which 7 candidates, 5 of whom were independent, competed, is as follows:

Osman Zorba (Cyprus Socialist Party) 1, Tufan Erhürman (Republican Turkish Party) 2, Arif Salih Kırdağ (Independent) 3, Ahmet Boran (Independent) 4, Mehmet Hasgüler (Independent) 5, İbrahim Yazıcı (Independent) 6, Hüseyin Gürlek (Independent) 7, Ersin Tatar (Independent) 8.

Hüseyin Gürlek, who had declared his candidacy as an independent, had applied to the YSK yesterday (October 18) to announce that he was withdrawing from the presidential race in favor of Ersin Tatar. Despite Gürlek's withdrawal, his name remained on the ballot paper in accordance with the Law on Elections and Referendums.

While the elections were ongoing, the YSK made a notable decision. Evaluating that Tatar had violated the relevant law by appearing on CNN Türk and speaking about the election after the election bans had begun, the board unanimously decided to send the file to the General Directorate of Police for an investigation to be launched against him.
