Bülent Arınç's 'Dynasty' remarks: Striking statement on the post-Erdoğan era
Bülent Arınç weighed in on the 'dynasty' debate regarding the possibility of Bilal Erdoğan's presidential candidacy. He stated that a transfer of power from father to son would not find support in Turkey, neither among the public nor within the AK Party base.
Bülent Arınç, one of the founding members of the AKP, made striking remarks regarding potential scenarios for the post-President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan era during a program he attended on Sözcü TV.
Responding to a question about the possibility of Bilal Erdoğan's presidential candidacy, Arınç emphasized that there has been no precedent for a transfer of power from father to son in Turkey to date. Stating that such a formula would create serious controversy in society, Arınç said, 'Turkey is not Azerbaijan. An example like the transition from Heydar Aliyev to Ilham Aliyev does not exist in our political and democratic memory.'
'IF THE PEOPLE WANT IT, IT HAPPENS, BUT IT WON'T BE MET WITH APPLAUSE'
While noting that theoretically everything is possible through elections, Arınç expressed that such a candidacy would not automatically receive acceptance from broad segments of society. 'If desired, it can happen; the people decide, but there is no precedent for it to date. I also do not think it would be immediately met with applause,' he said.
Stating that such a candidacy would be questioned not only by the opposition but also by AK Party voters, Arınç drew attention to Turkey's deep-rooted state tradition. 'We are talking about a country of 86 million people with a state tradition. This does not fit this sociology,' he remarked.
When asked about names mentioned in the corridors for the post-Erdoğan era, such as Hakan Fidan, Selçuk Bayraktar, and Berat Albayrak, Arınç avoided giving a direct name. Saying, 'I will not name names,' Arınç nevertheless made a notable reminder.
'ERDOĞAN MIGHT SAY "MY BROTHER IS SO-AND-SO" AT THE LAST MINUTE'
Recalling the phrase 'My brother is Abdullah Gül' that President Erdoğan used for Abdullah Gül in the past, Arınç said, 'I know Tayyip Bey's line in politics. When the election approaches, one day you might see him say, "My brother is so-and-so." Do not dismiss this.'
