Call from CHP for Ayşe Barım
CHP Deputy Chair Zeliha Aksaz Şahbaz, in a statement following the re-arrest of Ayşe Barım, stated that keeping Barım in pre-trial detention while ignoring her health problems is a violation of human rights and called for her immediate release.
CHP Deputy Chair Zeliha Aksaz Şahbaz issued a written statement following the re-arrest of Ayşe Barım. Şahbaz stated that Barım's arrest is intended to intimidate society.
“A PERSECUTION CONTRARY TO HUMAN RIGHTS”
In her statement, Aksaz Şahbaz noted that the accusations against Ayşe Barım are baseless, saying, “This case, which is being pursued with grave and evidence-free accusations such as attempting to overthrow the Government of the Republic of Turkey, is nothing more than a political witch hunt.”
Stating that Barım experienced health problems during the 248 days she spent in prison and lost 30 kilograms, Şahbaz emphasized that this situation reveals the extent of the lawlessness. Şahbaz said that re-arresting Barım while she was falling ill in the hospital is a form of persecution contrary to human rights.
“TORTURE AND ARBITRARY IMPRISONMENT”
Zeliha Aksaz Şahbaz stated that, given Barım's health condition, her pre-trial detention is contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights and the Constitution. She argued that continuing Barım's treatment under police supervision and sending her to prison constitutes torture and arbitrary imprisonment.
Şahbaz expressed that judicial decisions made under the instruction of the Palace disregard human health and the right to life.
“THE POLITICS OF REVENGE MUST END”
Stating that the politics of revenge continuing through the Gezi trial must end, Şahbaz said that sick prisoners must be released immediately. Saying, “Remaining silent in the struggle for justice and human rights is to be a partner in oppression,” Şahbaz emphasized that they are therefore not remaining silent and will continue to raise their voices against unlawful detentions.
