Call from Vahap Seçer for imprisoned mayors

Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Vahap Seçer visited former İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer, who is being held at İzmir Buca Prison. Making statements after the visit, Seçer stated that the legal basis for Soyer's detention is weak.

Seçer said, "I also met with Tunç Bey's wife, Neptün Hanım, and his daughter, Defne. They come to the prison every day and are going through this difficult process together. This situation shows that the law has become politicized. As mayors, we want a fair trial. Trial without detention should also be an option. Instead of keeping people in prison, the process could be carried out with measures such as judicial control," he said.

DEMAND FOR JUSTICE IN THE LEGAL PROCESS

Seçer stated that Soyer and other mayors being tried as part of the cooperative case are being accused due to social housing projects. "Efforts were made to provide housing for citizens who were victims after the earthquake. However, these efforts are being evaluated as attempted qualified fraud. There is no crime that has actually occurred, there are only allegations. I hope that their detention status will be reviewed next week and they will be released," he said.

CRITICISMS FROM ENGİN ÖZKOÇ

CHP Party Assembly member Engin Özkoç also said in a statement after the visit that the imprisoned mayors were being victimized. Özkoç stated, "These people should not be associated with a criminal organization. The same audits are not being conducted on AKP municipalities. These practices targeting CHP municipalities are not fair. We want justice," he expressed.

Özkoç added, "We do not want our mayors to be forced to become informants and convicted. This lawlessness will end one day and justice will be served," he said.
