‘Candidacy’ rumors surrounding Kılıçdaroğlu, who said ‘I will not be a candidate’: What is his offer to İmamoğlu and Yavaş?

The Republican People's Party (CHP) is preparing to hold its 38th Ordinary Convention on November 4-5. Final preparations for the convention have been completed within the CHP, which held its final Party Assembly meeting before the convention. The meeting lasted approximately 2 hours.

According to a report by Hüseyin Şimşek from BirGün, the Convention Report drafted by the members of the Central Executive Board (MYK) was discussed and approved at the final CHP Party Assembly meeting held with the current staff. The agenda also included the topic of “pardoning” individuals who had previously been expelled from the party but had not committed crimes against women or disgraceful offenses. It was noted that no decision was made on this matter, that the details would be addressed after the convention, and that the scope of the “pardon” process might change.

It was reported that there was no tension during the Party Assembly meeting and that 50 people attended the final meeting of the Party Assembly, which consists of approximately 68 members including natural members. It was also reported that CHP leader Kılıçdaroğlu, who is said to be neck-and-neck with the change-seekers regarding the support of convention delegates, is preparing for his speech on the day of the convention.

Accordingly, it is alleged that Kılıçdaroğlu might say in his final speech before the voting, “I am a candidate for the chairmanship for the last time and I will not be in the next convention.” It was noted that this possibility would continue to be discussed by Kılıçdaroğlu and his close team until the day the speech text is finalized. With only days left until the convention, it was learned that Kılıçdaroğlu would meet with both the Istanbul and Ankara Metropolitan Mayors. According to the information obtained, the party management, wanting to lower the tension at the convention, considered proposing Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu as the Convention Chair. However, it was stated that some deputies and Party Assembly members said, “The Convention Chair must be impartial, İmamoğlu is not impartial.”

CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, in a statement he made last September regarding the issue of candidacy for the chairmanship, had used the expressions: “I will not be a candidate. I have never been a candidate before. I have never submitted a petition. The organization nominated me. I will not apply to be a candidate in the upcoming convention, I will not submit a petition. If the organization nominates me, I will be a candidate.”
