CHP brings police search at Anıtkabir to Parliament's agenda
CHP Zonguldak MP Eylem Ertuğ Ertuğrul has brought the issue of military personnel being searched by police during the August 30 Victory Day ceremonies at Anıtkabir to the Parliament's agenda. Ertuğrul submitted a written parliamentary question to Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler, questioning the impact of this practice on the prestige of the Turkish Armed Forces.
It was stated that officers and non-commissioned officers attending the official ceremony at Anıtkabir were subjected to body searches by police after passing through four separate security checkpoints.
It was stated that only soldiers included on pre-determined lists were allowed to enter the ceremony area.
Ertuğrul emphasized that the legal and administrative basis for such security measures must be explained.
Stating that "Security is certainly important, but these practices must not exceed legal boundaries," Ertuğrul reminded that the Central Command is the authorized unit for searching military personnel and questioned which legislation the police search was based on.
The MP also stated that he was curious about the justifications for the extraordinary security measures and why these practices differed from ceremonies in previous years.
Ertuğrul stated, "Such practices could have serious consequences for the institutional discipline and prestige of the Turkish Armed Forces," and expressed that a delicate balance must be established between security and protocol.
QUESTIONS DIRECTED TO THE MINISTER
Ertuğrul directed the following questions to Minister Güler:
- Based on which legal regulation were the security lists prepared?
- Which legal and administrative legislation are the searches conducted by the police in compliance with?
- Why do these security practices differ from ceremonies in previous years?
- Has the impact of these practices on TSK personnel been evaluated in terms of institutional reputation?
- Which institutions provided the coordination between security and protocol?
