May 19 call from CHP's Bakan! 'We must understand it as a day of resistance'
CHP Deputy Chairman Murat Bakan has invited the people of İzmir to Gündoğdu Square for the May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. Stating that "we must understand May 19 not just as a holiday, but as a day of resistance," Bakan called for the protection of democracy and freedoms.
CHP Deputy Chairman and İzmir MP Murat Bakan, in a written statement, invited the people of İzmir to Gündoğdu Square for a rally they are organizing tomorrow at 18:00 to mark May 19. Bakan visited shopkeepers and toured villages in Karabağlar, Konak, Narlıdere, Torbalı, and Menderes alongside his party's mayors, provincial and district officials, municipal council members, and youth and women's branch members. Bakan also invited everyone to Gündoğdu Square on May 19.
Bakan said, "If there is a disregard for the constitution and a style of governance that ignores the rule of law in Turkey today; if the will of the nation is being usurped; if the dreams of young people are being suppressed and their hopes destroyed; then it is necessary to understand May 19 not just as a holiday, but as a day of resistance."

“LET US PROTECT DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOMS”
Bakan made the following call:
"Dear people of İzmir, when Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk landed in Samsun 106 years ago, on May 19, 1919, he did not just start a struggle for liberation; he ensured that a nation would decide its own future. May 19 is the cry of a people abandoned to despair and loneliness, saying 'I exist and I am here,' a day of resistance and awakening. Today, we are holding tightly to that cry and that will. Because those who seek their rights are being silenced, young people are not only losing their dreams for the future, but are being arrested for exercising their right to protest within the framework of their constitutional rights, and elected mayors are being arrested by members of the judiciary acting on the instructions of the palace.
If there is a disregard for the constitution and a style of governance that ignores the rule of law in Turkey today, if the will of the nation is being usurped, if the dreams of young people are being suppressed and their hopes destroyed, then it is necessary to understand May 19 not just as a holiday, but as a day of resistance. Just as in 1919, that is why we are in the streets, in the squares, and together everywhere. These squares, where we raise our voices shoulder to shoulder, seek our rights, and shout our demand for change, do not just reflect the will of today; they also shape the future of our country. Unique İzmir, where the first bullet was fired, where hope sprouted, where freedom permeated our very bones, and which sheds light on the bright tomorrows of the country with its identity and spirit; let us meet at Gündoğdu Square tomorrow at 18:00. Let us protect our Republic, democracy, and freedoms."
