CHP's Günaydın explains: The Mahmud Abbas and Can Atalay riddle in the Turkish Parliament

Following the Constitutional Court's ruling regarding the stripping of the parliamentary status of elected Hatay MP Can Atalay, the CHP will call for an extraordinary session of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) to address the situation of TİP MP Can Atalay.

The CHP Parliamentary Group will also consult with political parties in the TBMM to ensure the extraordinary session application is made with the signatures of as many MPs as possible. According to information obtained, representatives from other parties will accompany CHP members when the application for the extraordinary session is submitted to the Speaker of the Parliament.

According to a report by Mustafa Bildircin from BirGün; CHP Group Deputy Chairman Gökhan Günaydın spoke about the call for an extraordinary session regarding Can Atalay. Stating that they were making preparations for August 14, Günaydın said that a proposal of "What would you say to August 16?" had come from the parliamentary administration.

Günaydın noted that the "August 16" proposal did not come from Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş himself, but from the Deputy Secretary General of the TBMM. Reacting to Kurtulmuş making the offer through an intermediary instead of directly, Günaydın commented, "My interlocutors are politicians."

WILL IT CLOSE 1 DAY LATER?

Reminding that the TBMM will open on August 15 for Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas to address the General Assembly, Günaydın said, "If a promise is given that the Parliament will not be closed after the session on the 15th, we will evaluate this. However, this promise must be given personally by Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş." Günaydın described Kurtulmuş's attitude as "political discourtesy." CHP's Günaydın explained that they have been in contact with all political parties in the Parliament for the extraordinary session, stating that MPs from all political parties except for members of the People's Alliance (Cumhur İttifakı) and the IYI Party have signed the call. Günaydın noted that although the IYI Party Group did not provide signatures, they would be present in the Parliament for the extraordinary session.

PARLIAMENT WILL OPEN ON THE 15TH

Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas will speak at the TBMM General Assembly on Thursday, August 15. If Parliament Speaker Kurtulmuş and the CHP reach a consensus for August 16, the Parliament will not be closed and will convene with the agenda of TİP MP Can Atalay. Kurtulmuş will also meet with TİP Chairman Erkan Baş today at 13:00.
