CHP Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik makes 'Istanbul alliance' statement

Republican People's Party (CHP) Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik answered questions from Medyascope News Director Göksel Göksu.

Stating that he does not think the channels of dialogue for 'cooperation' have fully closed yet, Çelik said, "Currently, an 'Istanbul Alliance' has emerged in Istanbul. This is a grassroots alliance, and this alliance was also established with AKP voters."

Speaking about the alliance debates in the local elections, Çelik emphasized the words of CHP Chairman Özgür Özel that the word "alliance" has become worn out. Stating that Özel prefers to use the term "local cooperation" instead of alliances, Çelik said, "I do not think the channels of dialogue have fully closed yet."

Saying, "Currently, an 'Istanbul Alliance' has emerged in Istanbul," Çelik claimed that the Istanbul alliance is a grassroots alliance and that this alliance was also established with AKP voters.

'SOCIETY IS DIVIDED IN TWO'

"With the current presidential government system, this society has been divided in two regarding political preferences," said Çelik, arguing that the public follows politics and that efforts to obstruct Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu played an important role in the formation of this "Istanbul alliance."

Noting that voters have had a reflex to act together since 2017, Çelik said, "Now, displaying behavior contrary to this also means, in a way, attracting the reaction of that base itself."

"Society expects us to take ownership of this process," said Çelik, adding, "I do not think the channels of dialogue have fully closed regarding local cooperation yet."

'THE MOST SUCCESSFUL IN REPUBLICAN HISTORY'

Çelik said the following regarding İmamoğlu:

"I can state very clearly, in my opinion, Ekrem İmamoğlu is the most successful IMM Mayor in the history of the Republic."
