CHP leader Özel on 'Dilruba': 'Her arrest is unacceptable'
CHP leader Özgür Özel has reacted to the arrest of a citizen named Dilruba K., who expressed her opposition to the Instagram ban, the legislation regarding stray animals, and Turkey's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention.
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel made assessments regarding the arrest of Dilruba Y. following her remarks in a street interview in İzmir.
Özel stated the following:
"It is a requirement of democracy for politicians to be open to the harshest criticism from the public. Of course, insulting the political choices of voters is not an attitude that anyone would approve of. However, taking a matter where a citizen expresses their personal thoughts to the point of arrest is a disproportionate and political stance. In an environment where, right before our eyes, many who commit serious crimes go unpunished simply because they are under someone's protection, the arrest of Dilruba is unacceptable. This mistake must be corrected, and Dilruba must be released."
WHAT HAPPENED?
Dilruba K. was arrested after expressing her reactions to the Instagram ban, the legislation regarding stray animals, and Turkey's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention.
In the interview she gave, Dilruba K. had said, "There are influencers who use social media. Ninety percent of Turkey, and even the world, now makes a living through Instagram. You cannot just say 'I closed it, it's done' one evening without providing any justification."
