CHP leader Özel reacts sharply to the detention of Tanju Özcan
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel opposed the detention of Bolu Mayor Tanju Özcan by the gendarmerie at his home, stating that this incident creates victimization and damages the sense of justice.
The detention of Bolu Mayor Tanju Özcan by a gendarmerie operation at his home, rather than being summoned to give a statement regarding donations made to a foundation that provides scholarships to students in the city, has sparked political debate. Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel shared his view with the public via a social media statement, declaring that he finds the detention procedure unlawful.
In his message on the X platform, Özel used the following expressions:
"Having a mayor detained by a gendarmerie raid at his home instead of summoning him to testify is not the application of impartial law, but the application of enemy criminal law.
Our Bolu Mayor Tanju Özcan is answering questions regarding donations made to a foundation whose only job is to provide scholarships to students in his city.
These unlawful practices have no place in the conscience of the nation.
We stand with our Mayor!"
