CHP mayoral candidate withdraws in Edirne

Edirne's CHP Mayor and mayoral candidate Recep Gürkan has announced his withdrawal from the race in a statement made on social media.

Stating that he had met with CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, Gürkan said that the candidate would be determined by a primary election and that he would not be participating in the primary.

'I WILL WORK FOR THE CANDIDATE TO BE DETERMINED'

In his social media post regarding the matter, Gürkan included the following remarks: “The six-arrow flag of our CHP will continue to fly in Edirne.

In order to ensure that the Edirne Mayoralty, which our party has won uninterruptedly for 20 years, continues in the coming term, I have advocated for the candidate to be determined by a primary election on every platform since the first day.

I know that all members of the CHP, founded by the Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and the people of Edirne share the same view in Edirne, the unshakeable fortress of the Republic and secularism. Today, I shared these same thoughts with our Chairman, Mr. Özgür Özel, and conveyed to him that our candidate should be determined by a primary election, that I would not participate in the primary, that we would work until the end for the candidate expected by the organization to win, and that we would win Edirne again.

He also approached this proposal of mine very positively and stated that determining our candidate in Edirne through a primary election was the most correct decision. I offer my love and respect with the belief that the primary election will bring success to our Edirne, our prospective candidates, and our CHP."
