CHP municipalities' 'foundations and associations' move against SGK step: They will be reclaimed...

A new development has occurred in the ongoing 'SGK' debt debate.

According to a report by Sarp Sağkal from Cumhuriyet, CHP officials stated that in response to the pressure on municipalities over their SGK debts, they will hold meetings with mayors in the coming days to work on revenue-increasing measures. 

The officials said, “Our provincial mayors will come together in Burdur between August 1-3, with the participation of our chairman. The main agenda of this meeting was the reflection of meat and milk prices on the consumer and the problems of the sector. However, we will also evaluate these recent developments at the meeting. There have been obstacles before, but we continued our services, and we will continue to do so.”

'LANDS GIVEN TO FOUNDATIONS WILL BE RECLAIMED'

Stating that this will apply to municipal properties currently being used without rent, the party members said, “In the places we have newly taken over, there are shops, plots, and properties that were given for free to a foundation or a crony in the previous term. We will remove these physical occupations. For example, a building was given to a foundation and turned into a dormitory, or a shop is being occupied, and the rent is still not being paid. We will ensure that these are recovered and their revenues are returned.”

'THEY ARE DEMANDING DEBTS THEY DID NOT COLLECT FOR YEARS'

Speaking on why the debts were not demanded before, CHP officials said, “Since we won Ankara and Istanbul in the 2019 local elections, they have created different obstacles. They reduced resources and increased deductions from revenues. Now they want to do the same and create a perception that ‘they cannot provide services.’ There is a serious economic crisis in the country, and in addition to their own obligations, CHP municipalities are serving the public in many areas such as City Restaurants (Kent Lokantası), Pensioner Cards, milk distribution, People's Bread (Halk Ekmek) vehicles, social assistance, and dormitory support. However, the government wants to block these services because it views them through a partisan lens. That is why they are demanding the SGK debt that they did not collect for years when they were in power. In other words, they are doing a disservice to the public.”
