‘Alliance’ response from CHP to İYİ Party! Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik: If there is a deadlock at the central level, there is an Istanbul Alliance

The dialogue regarding an alliance between CHP and İYİ Party, the two leading parties of the Nation Alliance that dissolved after the general elections, continues with mutual statements. İYİ Party Group Deputy Chair Müsavat Dervişoğlu reacted to those advocating for an alliance between the two parties in a statement he made in Afyonkarahisar. CHP Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik evaluated Dervişoğlu's statements for 12punto.

In his speech at an organization meeting held by his party's provincial branch in a wedding hall in Afyonkarahisar, İYİ Party Group Deputy Chair Müsavat Dervişoğlu stated that some circles and some friends within their own party were claiming that CHP would lose the municipalities if the Nation Alliance was not renewed. Reacting to the alliance demands, Dervişoğlu said, "They stated that they could not win the 2023 election by forming an alliance despite very good conditions, and now they are telling us, 'Let's form an alliance in 2024 as well.' What should we do? Should we lose 2028 for your sake?"

THE GROUND FOR DIALOGUE HAS NOT CLOSED

12punto asked CHP Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik about Dervişoğlu's statements. Responding to 12punto's questions before a press statement in front of the Çağlayan Courthouse, Çelik stated that they believe the ground for dialogue regarding an alliance has not yet closed.

Çelik said the following:

“We believe that the ground for dialogue regarding an alliance has not yet closed. I mean, 2023 was a general election. We are going to a local election in 2024. The dynamics of general elections and local elections are different from each other. We do not think that the ground for an alliance is closed in terms of dialogue. However, beyond that, we are already constantly defining an Istanbul Alliance. In other words, this Istanbul Alliance is a grassroots alliance, a social alliance. Our Metropolitan Mayor, Mr. İmamoğlu, who has been managing Istanbul for 4.5 years, is carrying out very successful work. Since the day he was elected in 2019, he has provided very important services to Istanbul. In this sense, we clearly see that there is an Istanbul Alliance on the streets and in the field. A base that is satisfied with our Metropolitan Mayor's work has formed in Istanbul, regardless of which political party they vote for. Therefore, yes, we believe that alliance dialogues at the central level are not yet closed. However, we see very clearly that if there is a deadlock there, an Istanbul Alliance is also possible, and that this is a social alliance, a grassroots alliance. When we talk to the executives of various political parties, we see very clearly that they also have a perspective in this direction."

What will the CHP Istanbul Provincial Organization do if there is no alliance? Do you have a program regarding this?

“We will explain the successful work our Metropolitan Municipality has carried out since 2019 to the public in a very systematic way, together with our organizations in the 39 districts of Istanbul. At the same time, we will have district mayoral candidates. They will tell the public the stories of the work started by the Metropolitan Municipality and their own municipalities. Apart from that, we will manage the Istanbul Alliance process in constant communication and close dialogue with every segment of society, all political parties, and all democratic mass organizations.”
