CHP İstanbul Deputy Oğuz Kaan Salıcı made a statement regarding headscarf practices in Azerbaijan.
Salıcı stated that a libertarian and consistent human rights approach should be taken as a basis regarding the headscarf issue.
Expressing that opposing the forcing of women to wear headscarves in Iran and defending headscarf freedom in Azerbaijan are the result of the same principle, Salıcı said that serious human rights violations are also occurring in Turkey.
Opposing the forcing of women to wear headscarves in Iran and defending headscarf freedom in Azerbaijan are requirements of the same principle.
Salıcı argued that the AKP responds to human rights criticisms by saying "do not interfere in our internal affairs," and therefore is not in a position to lecture Azerbaijan on human rights.
Emphasizing that relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan are based on historical and cultural ties beyond the fields of energy, transport, and security, Salıcı said, "The people of Azerbaijan are our brothers. A requirement of being one nation, two states is to defend each other's freedoms."
