CHP sets the time: Call for protest in Bursa following Mustafa Bozbey's detention
In a statement regarding the detention of Metropolitan Mayor Mustafa Bozbey, CHP Bursa Provincial Chair Nihat Yeşiltaş called on citizens to gather in front of the Metropolitan Municipality Building at 19:00.
CHP Bursa Metropolitan Mayor Mustafa Bozbey was detained this morning, leading many citizens to gather in front of the municipal building. CHP members of parliament also attended the press statement held at the site.
STATEMENT FROM THE PROVINCIAL CHAIR
Speaking at the press conference, CHP Bursa Provincial Chair Nihat Yeşiltaş stated the following:
'There is only one reason for a minority government, which has no support among the people, to attack the people's party and its mayors: It is because they will win the first upcoming election as Turkey's leading party.
The detention of Bursa Metropolitan Mayor Mustafa Bozbey this morning, as a new link in the chain of political operations against CHP-run municipalities, is a clear intervention against the will of the people of Bursa, democracy, and the rule of law. This approach toward CHP municipalities, which disregards the will of the people, is absolutely unacceptable. It must not be forgotten that the will of the nation cannot be ignored.'
“THE PROCESS IS BEING LINKED TO AN OLD FILE”
Continuing his remarks on the process, Yeşiltaş noted the following:
'The fact that the process being conducted against Bursa's Mayor Bozbey is being linked to a file allegedly dating back 10 years and brought to the agenda years later is incompatible with the principles of the rule of law. The law cannot be made a tool for designing politics.
Bozbey, who has no risk of flight and would have gone himself if summoned, is a mayor who works among the people.
It is crystal clear that this operation is not legal but entirely political. We will continue to stand against any attempt that disregards the will of the people. With our faith in democracy and the law, we will continue to protect the will of the people of Bursa. The fundamental expectation of every conscientious citizen is for Mayor Bozbey to be released as soon as possible and return to his duties.
We are waiting for everyone who objects to the usurpation of the people's will here (in front of the Metropolitan Municipality Building) this evening at 19:00. We call on you to protect the will of the people.'
