CHP's Taşcıer speaks during minimum wage visit to Türk-İş: 'Step back from single raise policy'

CHP Deputy Chair responsible for the Ministry of Labor and Social Security Gamze Taşcıer and Malatya MP Veli Ağbaba visited Türk-İş President Ergün Atalay today.

Following the meeting between the CHP delegation and Türk-İş, Ergün Atalay and Gamze Taşcıer made statements to the press.

Speaking first, Ergün Atalay said regarding the minimum wage, "The working conditions in the country are clear, the wages are clear, and the prices in markets and bazaars are clear. Therefore, the commission, the board of presidents, and the management will carry out the process as they have every year."

Atalay continued: "I express this from time to time. Let them stop inflation; let there be no hikes in meat, milk, or rent. Then there is no point in talking about the minimum wage. You give a raise, and the next day you hike the prices! This is not a sustainable situation."

"CONSISTS ONLY OF A NUMBER"

Taking the floor after Atalay, Gamze Taşcıer said regarding the minimum wage, "Today, in this inflationary environment, where the Central Bank is not independent and TÜİK is not independent, stating a figure for the minimum wage is a very clear indication that it consists only of a number."

Taşcıer stated: "As the CHP, we have expressed that discussing the minimum wage solely through figures this term will not, on its own, ensure that workers and laborers earn an income worthy of human dignity, and therefore there are many topics we need to discuss."

"A STEP BACK MUST BE TAKEN"

"We hope that in the negotiations starting from Monday, a step back will be taken regarding the minimum wage, which is planned to be set only once a year," said Taşcıer, adding:

"Let us state this: Was making two minimum wage raises a year done so that the laborer would earn more and get more in return for their labor, or was it a necessity because purchasing power is decreasing day by day due to poor economic management? Because it is a necessity, the announcement that only one minimum wage raise will be made today does not cover up the reality that the minimum wage you announce today will fall below the hunger threshold in a month."
