While debates over negligence continue regarding the death of 14-year-old Mahmut Işıldak, who lost his life after being electrocuted in a puddle formed following heavy rainfall in Üsküdar, the first visit of the municipality's new deputy mayor, Muhammed Emin Sarıoğlu, has drawn attention.
Sarıoğlu, a member of the AKP who was elected as the sole candidate for the deputy mayor position following the arrest of Üsküdar Mayor Sinem Dedetaş, operations targeting municipal council members, and the canceled election process, visited the madrasa where Mahmut Işıldak was receiving education to convey his condolences.
Questions regarding the area where the incident occurred and the safety measures taken remain on the public agenda concerning Işıldak's death. Allegations that the parking lot where the child lost his life was illegal and operated by the İsmailağa Community have also been at the center of the discussions.
In its statement regarding the visit, the Üsküdar Municipality announced that Sarıoğlu "visited the madrasa where 14-year-old hafiz Mahmut Işıldak was receiving education and conveyed his condolences."
We are experiencing deep sorrow over the loss of our child, who at just 14 years old had engraved the Holy Quran into his heart. We pray for God's mercy upon our child Mahmut; we wish patience and condolences to his family, his teachers, and his loved ones. May his place be heaven, and his station be high.
This visit, which Sarıoğlu made immediately upon taking office, has sparked a new debate in the public eye, both because it was the first step taken following the change in administration in Üsküdar and because it coincided with a period when debates over responsibility regarding Işıldak's death are ongoing.
