Coup plot in Azerbaijan thwarted by Putin's warning
A planned coup attempt in Azerbaijan was prevented following a warning from Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Presidential Administration Chief Ramiz Mehdiyev was taken into custody.
It has been reported that a coup attempt in Azerbaijan was thwarted at the last minute. According to allegations, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to inform him about the coup plot. Following this warning, it was stated that Ramiz Mehdiyev, one of the high-level officials involved in the coup preparations in Azerbaijan, was taken into custody.
COUP PREPARATIONS AND MEHDIYEV'S ROLE
It was alleged that Mehdiyev planned to establish a transitional government in Azerbaijan and aimed to head it. However, this plan fell through after Putin warned Aliyev. According to Euronews, Mehdiyev was arrested shortly thereafter, and an investigation was launched against him on charges of conspiracy to seize power and treason.
The Azerbaijani news agency Minval announced that Mehdiyev had been removed from his post in the Presidential Administration. Last December, the downing of an Azerbaijani passenger plane by Russian air defenses, which resulted in the loss of 38 lives, had strained relations between the two countries. Following this incident, relations worsened further after two Azerbaijani citizens died during operations by Russian police in Yekaterinburg. However, following talks in Dushanbe, Aliyev had stated that relations with Russia were developing in a positive direction.
