Date set for acting mayor election in Çankaya
Following the arrest and subsequent suspension of Hüseyin Can Güner, the Çankaya Municipal Council will convene on July 22.
The Çankaya Municipal Council will convene to elect an acting mayor to replace Çankaya Mayor Hüseyin Can Güner, who was suspended by the Ministry of Interior following his arrest.
The election for the acting mayor will be held on Wednesday, July 22, at 14:00. The individual selected by the council will serve as the acting mayor in place of Güner.
CHP Mayor Hüseyin Can Güner had been arrested as part of an investigation conducted by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into the Çankaya Municipality.
The Ministry of Interior had also announced that Güner was suspended from his duties as a temporary measure following the arrest decision.
In its statement, the Ministry noted that the arrest warrant was issued by the Ankara 4th Criminal Court of Peace on July 15, 2026, as part of an investigation into Güner for the crimes of "Establishing an Organization for the Purpose of Committing Crimes, Accepting Bribes, and Rigging Tenders of Public Institutions and Organizations."
The statement further indicated that the suspension was carried out in accordance with Article 127 of the Constitution and Article 47 of the Municipal Law No. 5393.
