Date set for İmamoğlu's diploma trial

Date set for İmamoğlu's diploma trial

The investigation launched into Ekrem İmamoğlu, who has been removed from his post as Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and detained, over allegations that his university diploma is fake, has been completed. The prepared indictment has been accepted by the Istanbul 59th Criminal Court of First Instance.

In the indictment, it is alleged that İmamoğlu committed the crime of "chain forgery of official documents," and a prison sentence ranging from 2 years and 6 months to 8 years and 9 months has been requested.

FIRST HEARING ON SEPTEMBER 11

The trial process begins on September 11, 2025. Ekrem İmamoğlu will appear before the judge for the first time at 13:00 at the Istanbul 59th Criminal Court of First Instance.

Allegations regarding İmamoğlu's diploma intensified following the last local elections, and an ex officio investigation was launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office following complaints of document forgery.

During the investigation process, university records, the diploma document, notary certifications, and documents obtained from the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) were examined. The indictment includes statements that there is "strong suspicion that İmamoğlu's diploma is fake."
