DEM Party calls for extraordinary parliamentary session

The DEM Party has called for an extraordinary session of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey following recent economic developments. In a statement, the party argued that the economic crisis is deepening and that Parliament must address necessary measures without waiting for October 1.

The statement, published under the headline "The cost of the economic crisis is growing, Parliament must convene without waiting for October 1," included assessments from DEM Party Co-Chairs Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan.

The statement listed chronic inflation, rising bankruptcies, the growing debt burden, increased geopolitical risks, fuel price hikes, and recent developments on Borsa İstanbul as factors exacerbating the economic situation.

EMPHASIS ON Borsa İstanbul AND OVERSIGHT

In its statement, the DEM Party drew attention to the sharp decline on Borsa İstanbul, noting that the BIST 100 index lost more than 6 percent of its value and triggered circuit breakers following reports regarding certain investment funds failing to make payments to participants and news about specific companies.

The party stated that the role of regulatory bodies should be questioned during this process, raising the questions: "How long have these risks been known? What did the regulatory bodies do? Why could the growth of investors' losses not be prevented?"

The statement argued that the current situation cannot be dismissed as mere market volatility. The DEM Party assessed that, "One dimension of this crisis is direct exploitation, while the other is the lack of oversight by institutions that have moved away from meritocracy and the mismanagement of the economy."

The party stated that steps must be taken on issues such as easing the fuel burden on small producers and farmers, implementing stricter and more objective oversight in capital markets, imposing higher taxes on interest and rent income, restructuring debts, and ensuring tax justice.

The fact that Parliament is in recess cannot be a justification for waiting in the face of these developments that concern the income and savings of millions of citizens. Every day that passes until October 1 increases the cost of the economic crisis.

— DEM Party statement

In the statement signed by Hatimoğulları and Bakırhan, it was noted that they would support steps taken in favor of society to help Turkey emerge from the economic bottleneck, and the call was reiterated: "The Grand National Assembly of Turkey must convene in an extraordinary session without waiting for October 1 to take the necessary measures."
