DEM Party group meeting... 'A barrier is being placed in front of a historic opportunity'

DEM Party Co-Chair Tülay Hatimoğulları is making statements at her party's TBMM Group Meeting.

Hatimoğulları began her speech by addressing the death of 6 female workers, 3 of whom were children, in a fire in Kocaeli, stating, "They are trying to pass this off to us as a workplace accident. This fire shows how this damned system ruthlessly disregards people's labor." 

STATEMENT ON THE IBB INDICTMENT

Highlights from Hatimoğulları's speech are as follows:

"Are you not the ones keeping Selahattins, Figens, and Can Atalays in prison despite the ECHR's rulings? You continue to damage Turkey's reputation. Let the ECHR rulings be implemented. Let all our friends be released immediately.

Last Wednesday, we visited dear Selahattin Demirtaş. We would like to convey his greetings and love to you. We are waiting for the indictment of Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu and his colleagues to be issued. They could very well be tried without arrest; Ekrem İmamoğlu and the elected officials should be released immediately.

We can grow peace together. Democratic politics has very important duties on the path to peace. But essentially, it is the field of democratic politics that will give spirit to peace. The process, which has been ongoing for over a year, has moved to the second phase. The second phase is the time for democratic politics. This phase is the threshold of the most important door to be passed. The seed of peace has fallen into this soil; we cannot just say it will grow and walk away after sowing the seed. The sprout of peace is fragile. We must show more effort, devotion, and determination for this sprout to turn into a strong tree.

"THERE ARE THOSE PLACING A BARRIER IN FRONT OF A HISTORIC OPPORTUNITY"

The opposition is in favor of peace; unfortunately, there are those who are not. There are those placing a barrier in front of a historic opportunity. We can see headlines within the government and on behalf of the government that are openly anti-peace. These headlines are a great shame in the name of peace. Opposing peace is a historic crime committed against future generations. Peace and the resolution of the Kurdish issue cannot be sacrificed to the election calculations of certain political parties.

The struggle Mr. Öcalan has waged for peace and the paths he has opened date back a long time. There are very different feelings in society towards Mr. Öcalan, we understand this, we are aware of it. But as a society, we see this: there is a struggle persistently waged for peace. Peace is not a tactic, not a temporary maneuver, but a strategic choice. In an interview published nearly 30 years ago, Mr. Öcalan even says, 'I am a pure Anatolian child.' 

In the process that began on October 1, 2024, Mr. Öcalan's determination is very critical. From the very first day, he used positive language, did not get stuck on historical issues, and always acted with common sense. What did the President say? 'Currently, İmralı has given and is giving all kinds of support regarding this issue.' An important observation. What did Mr. Bahçeli say? 'It would strengthen the process if the deputies to be selected for the commission established in Parliament went to İmralı and received the messages firsthand.' An extremely important emphasis. Why shouldn't politics go where the state goes? Why shouldn't the political institution take the most active role in such a historic matter? 

Is it better to bypass an actor like Mr. Öcalan, or to include him more in the process? The answer is clear. The commission listening to Mr. Öcalan will accelerate the process and give confidence to society. One cannot move forward with prejudices. The commission must go to İmralı without delay and conduct this meeting on the island."
