DEM Party now demands Quran be read in Kurdish in mosques
DEM Party Co-Chair Tülay Hatimoğulları stated that the right to worship in Kurdish must be recognized. Hatimoğulları emphasized that Kurds should be able to read the Quran and give sermons in Kurdish in the public sphere.
Speaking at the 1st Ordinary Congress of the Mesopotamia Islamic Research Federation held at the Sezai Karakoç Culture and Congress Center, DEM Party Co-Chair Tülay Hatimoğulları drew attention to the importance of the right to worship in Kurdish. Stating that Kurds should be able to worship in their own language, Hatimoğulları said, "Kurds should be able to read the Quran in Kurdish and give sermons in Kurdish in the public sphere."
Hatimoğulları expressed that the current understanding of political Islam interferes with funeral ceremonies and that this situation is unacceptable. She stated, "Respect must be shown to the dead in these lands. However, the current system prevents our funerals from being laid to rest. Imams are not allowed to lead funeral prayers, and funeral vehicles are not provided."
Hatimoğulları called for an end to the interventions in funerals and condolences during these days when the peace process is being discussed. She concluded her words by saying, "Achieving true peace and justice depends on establishing the legal basis for the right to equal citizenship."
