The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) witnessed heated debates during its new legislative year sessions due to developments known in the public eye as the 'fund crisis.' DEM Party Group Deputy Chairman Sezai Temelli targeted the government, stating that the issue cannot be covered up.
The General Assembly convened under the chairmanship of Yusuf Beyazıt, who was elected as Deputy Speaker by the AK Party Group following the resignation of AK Party Şanlıurfa Deputy Bekir Bozdağ from his post as Deputy Speaker of the TBMM due to health issues. In his first session, Beyazıt wished for the Fifth Legislative Year of the 28th Term to be auspicious and conveyed his get-well wishes to Bozdağ.
Before moving to the agenda, group deputy chairmen took the floor, primarily to make assessments regarding the 'fund crisis.' New Way (Yeni Yol) Group Deputy Chairman Bülent Kaya argued that what has happened cannot be normalized by calling it a 'fund issue.' Stating, 'We are talking about a 25 billion dollar heist,' Kaya said that the responsibility of regulatory and supervisory institutions must be investigated.
Kaya stated that the Parliament must fulfill its oversight duty and expressed that the process can only be examined properly through a commission to be established in the TBMM. IYI Party Group Deputy Chairman Turhan Çömez recalled the previous statements made by Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek regarding allegations of stock market manipulation and reacted with the words, 'If you cannot handle it, step aside.'
"WE HAVE NEVER SEEN IT UNTIL TODAY"
CHP Group Deputy Chairman Serkan Sarı also brought the statements of the Ankara Bar Association No. 2 President to the agenda. Sarı called on the Ministry of Justice and the Council of Judges and Prosecutors (HSK) to make a statement and launch an investigation into the allegations that 70 lawyers and prosecutors who are members of the bar association were recommended through quotas over two years.
DEM Party Group Deputy Chairman Sezai Temelli stated that the 'fund issue' will be discussed for a long time and that it is grave that such a picture has emerged despite the existence of numerous institutions. Emphasizing that research motions should be taken seriously, Temelli argued that the government has not shown sufficient will on this matter.
Someone says: 'The Justice and Development Party is the patron of the destitute.' The Justice and Development Party we know is, at best, the patron of capital. Other than that, we have never seen it look after anyone until today.
Murat Emir also stated that the fund crisis is one of Turkey's most important agendas and alleged that an effective investigation is not being conducted by the Capital Markets Board (SPK), the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK), and Borsa İstanbul. Emir said they want the lists regarding the suspects and allegations of illicit gain to be disclosed on behalf of the public.
AK Party Group Deputy Chairman Muhammet Emin Akbaşoğlu stated that the government is making an intense effort to resolve the process. Noting that steps such as assigning the State Audit Board, establishing the Fund Coordination Board, submitting a legislative proposal, and transferring some companies to Emlak Katılım have been taken, Akbaşoğlu said they aim to manage a transparent, fair, and fast process without using public resources.
Protecting the rights and laws of our nation is our red line. Whoever has obtained exorbitant income and gained illicit profit through speculation or manipulation will definitely pay the price for it.
