Message from DEM Party's Sırrı Sakık on 'İmamoğlu': 'His loss is not our problem'

Following claims that the DEM Party would nominate Başak Demirtaş, the wife of former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş, for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality candidacy, and the announcement that the DEM Party would field a candidate in Istanbul, DEM Party Ağrı MP Sırrı Sakık made evaluations regarding the current agenda.

According to Ferit Aslan from Medyascope; Selahattin Demirtaş told Sakık, who visited him in prison, that the DEM Party should prepare for the local elections in an organized manner and that the losses experienced in the last general elections should be compensated, stating, “The DEM Party is no one's crutch.”

"WE DID NOT SEE STRONG SUPPORT"

Stating that the DEM Party should field its own candidates in metropolitan cities, Sakık said, “My personal opinion is that we have voted for CHP candidates for two elections, but we have not seen strong support against the antidemocratic attacks made against us, other than a few weak reactions.”

Noting that the base has serious reactions regarding this issue, Sakık said, “We did not sign any protocol with them and we were not in expectation; we only had a demand for democracy.”

“İMAMOĞLU LOSING IS NOT OUR PROBLEM”

Reminding that when they said they would enter the elections with their own candidates, some segments reacted to this decision on the grounds that Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu would lose the elections, Sakık said the following:

“Now we say we will enter the elections with our own candidates, and they say ‘İmamoğlu will lose.’ This is not our problem. What is important for us is not the loss or gain of two blocs that resemble each other; what is important for us is the development of democratic politics as a third-way policy.”
