DEM Party statement on Yunus Emre Geçti: No one can be subjected to ill-treatment in custody

Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Kocaeli MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu held a press conference at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).

During the meeting, Gergerlioğlu mentioned that certain images were reflected in the press during the transfer to the courthouse of Yunus Emre Geçti, who has 26 criminal records and martyred police officer Şeyda Yılmaz by shooting her during a scuffle in Ümraniye.

Noting that the judiciary will determine the perpetrator's punishment, Gergerlioğlu stated, "No one can be subjected to ill-treatment in custody. Whether guilty or innocent, you cannot administer punishment at the police station. It seems those police officers have also lost hope in the country's judicial system and are trying to administer punishment at the station. Minister of Interior and Minister of Justice, why did you let a 19-year-old with 26 criminal records roam free?"

Gergerlioğlu also criticized Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya for denying reports that an investigation had been launched regarding the events that occurred during the transfer of the suspect, Geçti, to the courthouse.
