Destici's 50+1 response to Erdoğan: 'If this stone is moved, the new presidential system will collapse'

AKP Chairman and President Erdoğan's remarks on the condition of abolishing the 50+1 requirement in presidential elections, which he brought to the agenda upon his return from Germany, have finally been addressed by BBP leader Mustafa Destici.

"THIS MATTER SHOULD BE CLOSED TO DEBATE"

Destici said the following:

“The 50+1 debates taking place in the public eye have unfortunately missed their target and are being pushed into different dimensions. The goal has begun to shift toward harming the People's Alliance. Any harm to the People's Alliance directly creates a national security issue and political instability.

These debates put the system in a difficult position, just as it was before 2016, and we would return to square one. Let us state clearly that 50+1 is the cornerstone of the Presidential Government System, that is, the presidential system. If this stone is moved, the new Presidential System will collapse. Therefore, this matter should be closed to debate. What needs to be done is to urgently democratize the Law on Political Parties and the Election Law. The financing of politics must be made transparent. The Treasury and Election Aid provided to parties in a manner contrary to the constitution must absolutely be abolished. The separation of powers must be firmly established, and legal and constitutional arrangements must be made to end conflicts in the relations between judicial institutions.”
