Detained IMM executive denied a bed in prison

It has been alleged that İpek Elif Atayman, Deputy General Manager of KENTHAŞ, a subsidiary of the Şişli Municipality, who was arrested as part of the investigation into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), is being deprived of humane conditions in prison. Lawyer Hüseyin Ersöz announced that his client, Atayman, has not been provided with a bed or bunk for five days.

Ersöz emphasized that this practice is a clear violation of the “Prohibition of Ill-Treatment”. In a statement made on the social media platform X, he said, “It is essential that all human needs of a person whose freedom is restricted in prison be met by the state. Acting in accordance with human rights is the primary duty of public personnel.”

İpek Elif Atayman, who is detained as part of the IMM investigation, was transferred to the Afyon No. 2 T-Type Closed Penal Institution last week.

We had heard that she was not given a bunk/bed on the first day, but the information that this situation has continued for 5 days had not been reflected to the public.

Stating that İpek Elif Atayman was transferred to the Afyon No. 2 T-Type Closed Penal Institution last week, Ersöz noted that while the deficiency experienced on the first day was thought to be temporary, the continuation of this situation for five days is unacceptable.

Ersöz’s statements are as follows:

“İpek Elif Atayman, who is detained as part of the IMM investigation, was transferred to the Afyon No. 2 T-Type Closed Penal Institution last week.

We had heard that she was not given a bunk/bed on the first day, but the information that this situation has continued for 5 days had not been reflected to the public.

It is essential that all human needs of a person whose freedom is restricted in prison be met by the state.

Acting in accordance with human rights is the primary duty of public personnel.

Not providing İpek Elif Atayman with a bunk/bed for 5 days is a clear violation of the Prohibition of Ill-Treatment.”
