Egyptian President Sisi to visit Turkey
It has been announced that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi's long-awaited visit to Turkey will take place in the coming days.
During his visit to Turkey in April as part of the Ankara-Cairo normalization process, then-Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry stated at a joint press conference following his meeting with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi would visit Turkey soon. It has been learned that Sisi will arrive in Turkey in the coming days.
Minister Fidan traveled to Egypt at the beginning of August to meet with the newly appointed Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, and Minister Abdelatty stated at the press conference held after the meeting that President Sisi's visit to Turkey had been discussed.
It was announced that Fidan and Abdelatty discussed preparations for the first High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council meeting to be held during President Sisi's planned visit to Turkey. While Egyptian President Sisi is expected to arrive in Turkey in the coming days, the normalization process between the two countries, particularly regarding Gaza, is expected to be on the agenda.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Tensions between Turkey and Egypt began on July 3, 2013, when Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi ousted Mohamed Morsi in a coup. Turkey was one of the countries that most strongly opposed the coup. Then-Prime Minister Erdoğan accused Sisi of being a 'murderer.' The 'Rabia' sign, which was used at every AKP rally during that period, emerged during this process. However, after 12 years, Erdoğan visited Egypt and met with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Holding a joint press conference with Sisi, Erdoğan said, "We have elevated our High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council to the presidential level. I told my dear brother that I look forward to welcoming him to Ankara at the first opportunity to hold our council meeting."
