Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has announced that the Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha Mosque, whose parts went missing after it was demolished by Adnan Menderes in 1957, will be rebuilt in accordance with its original design.
In a post, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu stated, "We are bringing the Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha Mosque, an architectural treasure of Istanbul that was destroyed during road widening works in 1957, back to Istanbul along with a Karaköy Square library that we will establish underneath it." The details of the project have not yet been determined.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The demolition of the Kara Mustafa Pasha Mosque took place as part of urban development projects carried out during the Democrat Party government.
In the 1950s, the historical fabric of Istanbul was affected by large-scale reconstruction activities, particularly during the period when Adnan Menderes served as prime minister.
During this process, many historical structures were demolished to create modern roads and large squares in Istanbul.
The Kara Mustafa Pasha Mosque was also demolished during this period as part of road widening works in the Unkapanı area.
