Elevator tragedy, moldy food, crabs... Minister Bak said there is no problem!

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) Planning and Budget Committee Meeting held discussions on the 2024 budget of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

According to the report by Mustafa Bildircin from BirGün; Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Aşkın Bak brushed off questions regarding existing problems.

"MOLDY, BUG-INFESTED FOOD..."

CHP Deputy Chair and MP Gökçe Gökçen was among the deputies who asked questions for Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Aşkın Bak to answer regarding the problems experienced in KYK dormitories.

The following statements were used in Gökçen's question:

“When will you see the warnings of the youth, the wormy, moldy, bug-infested food, the dormitories filled far beyond their capacity, the harassment cases in the dorms, the curfew policy applied to female students but not to male students, and despite this, the female students you cannot protect from harassment and threats, Mr. Minister?”

"INTERNATIONAL STANDARD AND HIGH QUALITY"

Minister Bak did not respond to Gökçen's question during the committee meeting. A written response was provided to the question regarding the problems of the youth staying in KYK dormitories. Minister Bak's response revealed that the problems students face in the dorms are being ignored. In his response, Bak did not address the harassment cases in the dorms or the unequal practices against women, but the expressions he used regarding the quality of the food in the dorms drew attention. While photos of moldy and wormy food have been coming from KYK dormitories in almost every part of Turkey, Minister Bak claimed in his response that the food quality in the dorms is of a high standard, stating the following:

“Students residing in Ministry dormitories are provided with quality, safe food with high nutritional value, in a variety and quantity that contributes to their adequate and balanced nutrition, in accordance with national and international food legislation.”
