CHP Chairman Özgür Özel responded to the remarks made by President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan regarding elections during a speech he gave in Kars, where he was visiting for a series of engagements.
Criticizing the phrase Erdoğan used in his speech in Rize, "I renew my belief that we will successfully get through the upcoming elections, God willing," Özel stated that elections cannot be viewed as a process to be "gotten through."
Addressing Erdoğan, Özel said, "Mr. Erdoğan, illnesses are gotten through, difficulties are gotten through, crises are gotten through. Elections, which are the hope of the nation, are not something to be gotten through."
Touching upon economic conditions in his statement, Özel added, "An election is not a difficulty, it is not something to be feared, and it is not a place to enjoy yourself for another 5 years. Because when you are in power again, and conditions are like this, a pensioner cannot even get through hunger with 23 thousand liras, let alone you getting through the election?"
