The meeting between Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş and President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has created a stir in opposition circles. The announcement that the meeting took place at Yavaş's request has brought evaluations regarding Yavaş's political position back to the agenda, particularly within the CHP.
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel stated that he was aware of the meeting beforehand, saying, "I was informed about the meeting. Mr. Mansur went with my approval." While it is assessed that Özel aimed to calm reactions within the party base with these words, it is stated that expectations regarding Yavaş's future political stance persist in CHP corridors.
According to a report in the Türkiye newspaper, the view that Yavaş must now more clearly demonstrate his political affiliation has come to the fore on the CHP side. It was reported that party officials commented, "We have a final date in mind, and by this date, everyone must make their political affiliation clear."
In the same assessments, it was emphasized that while it is important for Yavaş to remain in the CHP, the prolongation of uncertainty could also wear down the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor. For this reason, it is stated that there is a tendency within the party arguing that the process should not be dragged out any further.
A MESSAGE OF COMMON SENSE FROM YAVAŞ
Mansur Yavaş, who made a statement on his X account regarding the discussions, said that if his current stance causes discomfort at the headquarters of either party, he would not hesitate to take the necessary steps. Yavaş stated, "In such an environment, I do not find it right to take sides, nor do I find it right for any step I take to be interpreted as support for one of the parties. Where I stand is clear. I am where common sense is."
In his statement, Yavaş expressed that he advocates for reducing tension rather than increasing it, and for dialogue rather than division, stating that he maintains his current position.
AKP Spokesperson Ömer Çelik also provided information about the meeting in a statement following the MKYK meeting. Çelik stated that Yavaş requested an appointment upon the President's return from Bitlis Ahlat, where he had gone for the August 25 Malazgirt Victory celebrations, and said, "The meeting took place with our President's discretion. They discussed the problems of Ankara and the investments to be made in the coming period."
