'Euthanasia' debate in Parliament... Call to the Commission from CHP's Emir: 'We must do this in front of all of Turkey'

The parliamentary commission continues to deliberate on the bill regarding the putting down of stray animals, which is being discussed in the public eye as the "euthanasia law" and has drawn reactions from animal rights advocates and the opposition.

'WE MUST DO THIS IN FRONT OF ALL OF TURKEY'

In the commission, which was attended by many animal rights advocates, CHP Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir stated to Commission Chairman Vahit Kirişçi of the AKP that the discussion should be held in a larger hall and said the following:

"Since this law needs to be discussed in every aspect, it is clear that such a hall is not suitable for conducting this debate. Mr. Chairman, what needs to be done, if such a law is to be enacted, is to create a healthy environment where we can listen not only to members of parliament and commission members, but also to civil society, associations, universities, professional organizations—that is, everyone who has a voice and something to say regarding stray animals. We are demanding this from you. There are much more suitable halls under the roof of our Parliament. Discussions should be held in those halls in a calm manner, where everyone can speak and bear witness.

What you should not do is remove those invited to this commission, especially the cameras. Everyone needs to be here, and this duty falls upon you. We have to conduct this discussion in a larger and healthier environment, and we must do this in front of all of Turkey, and we invite you to fulfill your duty in this regard."

Commission Chairman and AKP MP Vahit Kirişçi did not accept the opposition MPs' request to move to a larger hall.
