Fatih Erbakan reveals the goal behind the 'new constitution'! 'The real issue here is...'

The New Welfare Party (YRP), which received 6.19 percent of the vote in the March 31 Local Elections, became the third-largest party across Turkey.

Closing its doors to an alliance with the AKP and entering the election with its own candidates, the YRP won the Şanlıurfa Metropolitan Municipality and the Yozgat Municipality, taking over the administration of 62 municipalities in total.

YRP Chairman Fatih Erbakan evaluated the results of the March 31 Local Elections.

WHAT DID HE SAY ABOUT CHP'S SUCCESS?

Speaking to Gazete Duvar, Erbakan said that voters showed a yellow card to the AKP government. Emphasizing that one of the most important reasons for the election results was economic hardship, Erbakan said the following regarding the CHP's success;

“We believe that the IYI Party and the DEM Party lost about five points each, and these votes largely went to the CHP. This is an indication that the “ballot box alliance” mentioned by the CHP materialized on the opposition side. Ultimately, the CHP increased its vote and became the first party. The AK Party fell to the position of the second party after twenty-two years and, of course, lost hundreds of its municipalities. The government received very serious blows in places where they were very ambitious, such as Adıyaman, Kilis, and Gaziosmanpaşa in Istanbul, as well as in many other places like Kütahya and Amasya.”

"OUR MAYORS ARE BEING PRESSURED TO SWITCH TO THE AK PARTY"

Speaking about the resignation of Ali Öztoklu, who won the election in Konya's Doğanşehir district with 47.28 percent of the vote, from the YRP, Erbakan gave the following response to the question, “Is there pressure on the municipalities you won, or do you expect any?”;

“Of course there is. During the election period, serious efforts were made targeting our candidates and our provincial chairmen. Either through benefits or threats, they were pressured to withdraw their candidacy or not to work. However, despite all this pressure, it really didn't affect even a handful of our 1,400 candidates. Our candidates and our organizations stood firm. Now, of course, this is happening with our mayors, unfortunately. There are certain meetings, efforts, and pressures aimed at having them switch to the ruling party and resign from us…

We held a meeting with our mayors. We told them as well. A mayor who goes to the ruling party does not encounter a very different picture either. Because there is no money in the state either. It is not possible for them to give you anything suddenly just because you switched to the ruling party.”

"THIS IS OUR REAL SURVIVAL ISSUE, OUR MOST URGENT PROBLEM"

Erbakan, who is considering meeting with CHP leader Özgür Özel and AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, stated that their primary agenda in a possible meeting with Erdoğan would be the economic bottleneck, saying;

“Rather than the Constitution, this is the nation's most important problem. This is our real survival issue, our most urgent problem.”

Speaking about the new constitution debates on the agenda, Erbakan said that a step that democratizes the current presidential system would relieve Turkey.

Erbakan spoke as follows; 

“The change we mean and the change the nation expects is a more democratized presidential system. But I don't really think it is being done with such an intention. The real issue here is paving the way for the President to run for office once more and lowering the election threshold to forty percent.”
