YENİ Party Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır made evaluations regarding İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay joining the AKP during a press conference held at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).
Tugay, who announced he would continue his duties as an independent after resigning from the CHP, joined the AKP today with a ceremony held at the AKP Headquarters. President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan pinned the AKP badge on Tugay.
Speaking at the ceremony, Tugay stated, "The AK Party is the voice of the voiceless."
BAŞARIR: "A SHAMEFUL SITUATION"
Criticizing Tugay's joining the AKP, Başarır drew a comparison between the mayors who joined the ruling party and those who were arrested or detained.
Başarır spoke as follows:
"Today, they held a group meeting at the AK Party Headquarters. They announced that they had registered the Mayor of İzmir as a member of their own ranks. It is a shameful situation."
Touching upon the recent arrests and detentions of some mayors, Başarır stated, "Those who resist are in prison. Those who bend and fold are being pinned with badges in the AKP group."
HIS REMARKS TOWARD TUGAY DREW REACTION
In the continuation of his statement, Başarır used personal remarks toward Cemil Tugay, who is a plastic surgeon.
Başarır said, "I have only one suggestion for him. As you know, he is a plastic surgeon. He should first perform a procedure on himself and change his face. Because with that face, he cannot walk the streets of İzmir. He can only come to the group for the badge ceremony."
CLAIM OF "500 THOUSAND VICTIMS"
In his speech, Başarır also touched upon the fund discussions on Turkey's agenda. Stating that a parliamentary inquiry motion had been submitted regarding the issue, Başarır said that approximately 500 thousand people were victims and that there was an allegation of a 90 billion dollar fraud.
Arguing that an investigation commission should be established in Parliament, Başarır also made evaluations regarding the presentation that Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz will make at the TBMM.
