Foreign Minister Fidan on the lifting of CAATSA: 'There are ongoing efforts'
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan evaluated Turkey-US relations, the NATO summit, and issues concerning Syria and Ukraine during a live broadcast.
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan made statements regarding topics in Turkey-US relations and regional developments during a live broadcast. Fidan stated that the process for lifting CAATSA sanctions is progressing, noting that the public may see the results of ongoing efforts in this regard in the near future.
Stating that the US administration has confirmed President Donald Trump's attendance at the NATO summit, Fidan expressed that this is an "important and positive" development for the NATO community. Fidan pointed out that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's invitation was a determining factor in Trump's attendance.
Fidan emphasized that the global leadership vision President Erdoğan has demonstrated over the years, the network of relationships he has built, and the element of trust in the international arena are significant for Turkey's position.
KEY TOPICS IN TURKEY-US RELATIONS
Stating that there are functioning channels between Turkey and the US in areas such as trade, economy, education, technology, and people-to-people relations, Fidan pointed to long-standing issues regarding geopolitical matters.
Fidan noted that a serious area of concern for Turkey's national security had emerged, particularly due to Syria policy and the support provided to the YPG. Arguing that this policy was officially abandoned during Trump's second term, Fidan stated that this means one of the biggest areas of contention between the two countries has been eliminated.
Expressing that the Trump administration's policies and Turkey's strategic goals overlap regarding ending the war in Ukraine, Fidan said there is a similar approach to the issue of stability in Syria.
Fidan stated, "There are certain steps being taken to lift the CAATSA sanctions. There are ongoing efforts in this direction. As these are implemented, our public will see them. It could be a near date."
Fidan also noted that the completion of procedures in the CAATSA process and the legal process in the US Congress may not always proceed on the same timeline.
